What a review request text system costs a handyman, and the month it pays back

A plain cost breakdown of automated review request texts for a handyman business, what you pay each month, and how many extra jobs it takes to break even.

You finish a job, the customer says thanks, and you mean to ask for a review. Then the next call comes in, you drive to the next house, and the ask never happens. Most handymen lose more reviews to a busy afternoon than to unhappy customers.

A review request text system fixes the forgetting. It sends the ask for you, a few hours after the job, every time. The question is whether it is worth the monthly bill. Here is the math.

Where most handymen start

Across the 41,754 handyman listings we track, the median listing has 3 reviews. A full 25.6% have none at all, and 71.7% have fewer than ten. To beat three out of four listings you need about 11. To reach the top tenth you need about 34.

That is a low bar compared to most trades. It also means a handyman who gets even two reviews a month pulls ahead of most of the town within a year. The benchmark report breaks this down by state if you want your local number.

What the system costs

There are three common ways to set this up. Prices below are typical ranges, not quotes.

Do it by hand with a saved text. Cost: nothing but your time. You keep a text on your phone with your review link and send it from the driveway. This works if you actually do it. Most people do it for two weeks and stop.

A review tool bolted onto your phone line or invoicing app. Cost: roughly $30 to $100 a month. Many invoicing and scheduling apps already have this built in, and you may be paying for it without using it. Check your settings before you buy anything new.

A full texting platform with review requests, missed-call text-back and follow-ups. Cost: roughly $100 to $300 a month, sometimes with a setup fee. You get more than review asks, which matters for the payback math below.

Add your own setup time: about an hour to load your review link, write the message and connect it to the end of a job.

The payback math

Say you pick a tool at $75 a month and your average job is $275. One extra job a month covers it more than three times over. The real question is whether more reviews bring that one job.

Here is a hypothetical. You finish 40 jobs a month. You send every customer one text and one reminder. If one in five leaves a review, that is eight reviews a month. A listing at 3 reviews would pass the 11 mark inside two months and the 34 mark in about four.

Reviews do not convert to jobs on a fixed schedule, so nobody can promise a number. What we can say is that people comparing three handymen on a map tend to call the one with more recent reviews and a written reply to each. Moving from a handful to a few dozen is the kind of change a homeowner notices. If that shift wins you one extra $275 job a month, a $75 tool paid for itself in month one.

If you pick the larger platform at $200 a month, you need about one extra job a month to break even, and most owners get part of that back from the missed-call text-back alone. The calculator shows what your missed calls are already costing you.

What to put in the text

Keep it short. Use their first name. Send it two to four hours after you leave, while the fixed door still closes right.

"Hi Dana, thanks for having me out today to fix the deck boards. If you have a minute, a quick Google review helps a small business like mine a lot. Here is the link: [link]. Thanks again."

Send one reminder three days later if they have not left one. Then stop. Two asks is polite. Three is a nag.

The Google reviews guide has more scripts, including what to say in person before the text goes out. Saying "you will get a text from me tonight with a review link" at the door roughly doubles the chance they open it, in our experience.

When it does not pay

A review tool will not help if you finish fewer than ten jobs a month. Send those asks by hand.

It will not help if your work is generating complaints. More asks bring more honest reviews, good and bad. Fix the work first.

And it will not help if nobody answers the phone when the new calls come in. Reviews bring the call. Somebody still has to pick up or text back inside a few minutes.

The short version

If you finish 20 or more jobs a month, a $30 to $100 review tool almost always pays back within the first month or two, as long as it brings in one extra job. Start by checking whether your current invoicing app already does it. Load your link, write the text above, and turn it on before the end of the week.
