Handyman Growth is an independent site for people who own handyman businesses and want more booked work without signing a contract to find out whether the marketing works.
Who writes it
Steve Meitler is the editor. He has spent years running marketing for local service businesses, handyman and small-repair operations among them, and has watched a lot of owners pay for leads that were never routable in the first place. The guides here are written the way he would explain it to an owner in a parking lot: what to do, what it costs, what to expect, and what to ignore.
Where the benchmark numbers come from
The benchmark report is built from public Google Business Profile listings. We run Google Maps searches for handyman businesses in every US state, keep the public fields on each listing (review count, star rating, website link, listed hours, category, location), remove duplicates by Google place, and compute the statistics you see. Nothing comes from behind a login and no reviewer or customer data is stored. The dataset currently holds 41,754 listings across 51 states and is refreshed monthly.
Two honest caveats. First, at this scale collection errors exist, so treat every figure as accurate to within a point or two rather than to the decimal. Second, the handyman category on Google is messy: 24.5% of these listings have no rating at all, and plenty of one-person operations sit next to remodelers and general contractors who list under the same category. We report what is there rather than cleaning it into a prettier number.
Editorial rules
- No pay-to-play. Nobody buys a mention, a recommendation, or a spot in a guide.
- Every number is tied to something: our dataset, or a primary source such as Google's own documentation or a state licensing board. Opinions are labeled as opinions.
- Guides have to be usable by an owner who is on a ladder most of the day. If a step cannot be done in an evening or handed to an office person, it does not go in.
- We date every guide and update it when the platforms change.
- Licensing rules are described in general terms and always point back to the state board, because the dollar thresholds move and they are not the same in any two states.
How the free trial works
The site is funded by the marketing work we do for handyman businesses. Every service is offered as a free 14-day trial because an owner should watch the phone before paying anyone. You text or call, say which service you want to try (Google Ads, Meta ads, AI search optimization, local SEO and Google profile work, a website, social media, review generation, missed-call text-back, email and SMS, bookkeeping, or appointment setting), and we set it up inside your own accounts, usually within 48 hours of a 20-minute setup call. It runs 14 days. No card is taken and nothing renews. At the end you keep it at a price quoted before the trial started, switch to a different service, or stop.
